Where Did Emma Watson Go To College?
Emma Watson is a famous actress, activist, model and entrepreneur who is best known for playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series. But did you know that she is also a brilliant scholar who graduated from one of the most prestigious universities in the world?
Emma Watson’s Early Education
Emma Watson was born in Paris, France, on 15 April 1990, to English lawyers Chris Watson and Jacqueline Luesby. She moved to Oxford, England, with her mother and brother after her parents divorced when she was five years old
She attended The Dragon School, an independent preparatory school in Oxford, until 2003, and then transferred to the Headington School, another independent school in Oxford. She was tutored on set while filming the Harry Potter movies, and she excelled in her studies, especially in English literature, geography and art. She received nearly perfect grades in her advanced level exams
Emma Watson’s College Experience
Emma Watson decided to pursue higher education in the United States, and she enrolled at Brown University, an Ivy League school in Providence, Rhode Island, in 2009. She chose Brown because she liked its flexible curriculum and its liberal arts approach. She also wanted to experience a different culture and meet new people
She majored in English literature and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2014. She took some time off from school to work on her film projects, such as My Week with Marilyn (2011), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), The Bling Ring (2013) and Noah (2014). She also spent a year studying at the University of Oxford as part of an exchange program
She enjoyed her college experience and learned a lot from her professors and classmates. She told Rookie magazine in 2013: “I’ve kind of been in charge of my own education since I started out on Potter when I was 9 or 10. And I liked that I could design my own major if I wanted to, and I could take independent studies if I wanted to on subjects that weren’t necessarily in the curriculum. I did an independent study on the psychology and philosophy of how and why we fall in love, which was awesome.”
Emma Watson’s Challenges as a Student
Being a famous actress while attending college was not easy for Emma Watson. She faced some challenges from both the media and her peers.
She told The Sunday Times in 2013: “On the first day, I walked into the canteen and everyone went completely silent and turned to look at me. I had to say to myself, ‘It’s okay, you can do this. You just have to take a deep breath and gather your courage.’”
She also said that some students would make fun of her or reference Harry Potter around her. She said: “I found it very difficult when it was bad — I can’t even tell you how bad it was.”
She also had to deal with paparazzi and tabloids following her every move and spreading rumors about her personal life. She said: “It was horrible. This has been much more challenging than I ever anticipated.”
However, she did not let these difficulties stop her from pursuing her education and her dreams. She said: “I’m not going to compromise the quality of my life because other people are silly about me.”
Emma Watson’s Post-College Achievements
Emma Watson has continued to impress the world with her achievements after graduating from college.
She has starred in more films, such as Beauty and the Beast (2017), The Circle (2017) and Little Women (2019). She has also become a prominent activist for women’s rights and gender equality. She was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014 and launched the HeForShe campaign, which invites men to join the fight for gender equality. She has also been involved in other initiatives, such as Time’s Up UK, G7 advisory body for women’s rights and Kering board of directors
She has also launched her own gin brand called Renais, which she co-founded with her brother Alex in 2023. The gin was inspired by the wine region of Chablis, where her family has been making wine for 30 years
She has also maintained a low-key personal life and kept her relationships private. She has said that she values her privacy and her independence. She has said: “I want to be consistent: I can’t talk about my boyfriend in an interview and then expect people not to take paparazzi pictures of me walking around outside my home. You can’t have it both ways.”
Emma Watson is an inspiration to many people who admire her talent, intelligence, courage and passion. She has shown that she can balance her career, education and activism, and still be herself. She has said: “I don’t want other people to decide who I am. I want to decide that for myself.”
